Sedation Dentistry

Oral Sedation

A prescribed sedative taken before your appointment to help you feel deeply relaxed while remaining conscious and responsive.

What is oral sedation?

Oral sedation uses a carefully selected medication taken by mouth before your dental visit. It produces a deeper sense of calm than nitrous oxide alone and is helpful for patients with significant anxiety or longer treatment appointments.

You will need an escort to drive you to and from the appointment, and you should follow fasting and medication instructions provided before the visit.

Who may benefit

Oral sedation may be recommended when anxiety would otherwise make treatment difficult, when multiple procedures are planned in one visit, or when nitrous oxide alone is not enough.

  • Moderate to higher dental anxiety
  • Longer restorative or surgical appointments
  • Patients who prefer not to remember as much of the visit

Safety and planning

Before prescribing oral sedation, we review your health history and medications. We explain what to expect, how long effects may last, and any aftercare instructions so you can plan your day safely.
