Frenectomies (Tongue-Ties)

A frenum is a small band of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth, or the lip to the gums. When that tissue is unusually tight or short, it can limit movement and, in some children, contribute to feeding difficulties, speech concerns, or gum recession as teeth develop.

Not every visible frenum needs treatment. We assess function, symptoms, and growth before recommending a frenectomy, and coordinate with parents and, when appropriate, other care providers.

A frenectomy releases the restrictive tissue so the tongue or lip can move more freely. The approach depends on the child's age, the type of frenum, and clinical findings. We take time to explain the process, comfort measures, and aftercare before any treatment.
