Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
A mild inhaled sedative that helps you feel calm and comfortable during dental treatment while remaining awake and responsive.
What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative delivered through a small nose mask. It takes effect quickly and wears off shortly after the gas is stopped, which means most patients can drive themselves home after their appointment.
It is commonly used to ease dental anxiety, reduce gag reflex sensitivity, and make longer or more involved procedures feel more manageable.
Who may benefit
Nitrous oxide can be a good option if you feel nervous about dental visits, have a sensitive gag reflex, or simply prefer a calmer experience during treatment. Suitability depends on your medical history, which we review before recommending sedation.
- Patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety
- Patients who tense up during injections or longer appointments
- Patients with a strong gag reflex during impressions or x-rays
What to expect
We place a soft nose mask and adjust the nitrous and oxygen mix to a comfortable level. You remain awake, able to respond, and aware of your surroundings. When treatment is finished, we switch to oxygen so the effects clear quickly.
