General Anaesthesia & Sedation

If you suffer from a phobia or prefer to be under for your procedure, sedation may be an option for you

Sedation options available at Crestwood Dental Clinic

Sedation dentistry is the use of various methods to solve pain and anxiety while visiting the dentist for a procedure. Sedation can be used for teeth cleaning to invasive procedures.

Levels of sedation include:

Minimal: you will be awake, but relaxed during the procedure.
Moderate: you may not recall too much of the procedure.
Deep: near consciousness, but can still be awakened
General anesthesia: you are completely under and unconscious.

Some individuals suffer from “dental phobia”, a syndrome in which visiting the dentist can be a particularly terrifying ordeal. The unfortunate reality is that dental anxiety and oral health are associated. It also prevents some people from visiting the dentist on a regular basis, and from undergoing necessary dental procedures. We understand dental anxiety, which is why it is our top priority to put you at ease at Crestwood Dental Clinic. We offer compassionate and caring support and various dental sedation management options for you to choose from.

In order to proceed with your dental treatments, we are able to treat your dental anxiety and phobia with different options. Depending on the course of treatment, your dentist may administer a local anesthetic, or freezing agent, to diminish any discomfort. Rest assured we will not proceed with any work until you are well informed and totally comfortable.

Freezing and nitrous oxide

In addition to the use of freezing agents, we also offer our patients nitrous oxide sedation, aka laughing gas, as a remedy for dental anxiety and fear. This colourless and odourless gas provides nervous patients with a safe and effective sedation option to put their minds at ease during certain dental procedures such as wisdom teeth removal.

A small mask is placed over the nose to dispense the laughing gas. As you begin to inhale, you’ll feel calm, euphoric and relaxed, yet alert. When the mask is removed, the effects of the laughing gas will subside immediately, allowing you to drive home safely without the need for a chauffeur.

Oral sedation

Under oral sedation, a pill is ingested about an hour before the procedure and consciousness can range from minimal to moderate. The pill will make you drowsy, but you will still be cognizant of what is transpiring. A larger does of the sedative can be administered for moderate sedation.

You may become groggy, but can be awakened with a gentle nudge.
