Explaining oral surgery procedure

Oral Surgery in Medicine Hat

At Crestwood Dental Clinic in Medicine Hat, we offer oral surgery. There are a number of conditions that could require this type of service including:

Teeth are extracted for a wide variety of reasons including:

  • Decay
  • Cracks
  • Fractures
  • Infections
  • Severe gum disease
  • Impaction (when a tooth is still underneath the gums in the jawbone)

Impacted Teeth

The most common impacted teeth are wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to develop. Sometimes these teeth erupt from the gum line and the jaw has enough room to accommodate them. Often, however, the wisdom tooth has no room and fails to emerge in proper alignment or fails to fully emerge through the gum.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a number of problems from pain and swelling to gum tissue infection. Additionally, an impacted wisdom tooth can cause serious damage to the gums, nearby teeth, and bone. Cysts or tumors can form, destroying sections of the jaw.

Getting your impacted wisdom teeth surgically removed is highly recommended. Other teeth that might become impacted include cuspids and bicuspids, resulting in similar problems.

At Crestwood Dental Clinic we do all wisdom teeth extractions including difficult impactions, eliminating the need to travel out of the city.

Dental Implants

If you have lost a tooth, an implant can be a great option. An implant is a titanium post that is surgically installed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth or to anchor a denture. Dental implants are simple to insert and only require diligent oral hygiene to keep free of infection and other problems.
