Five Tips to Help You Choose the Right Toothbrush
Tip #1 - The Softer the Bristles, the Better
Many people mistakenly prefer harder bristles because it seems to make sense that the harder a scrub a toothbrush can give, the better. The truth is, however, that soft bristles are just as effective at removing plaque and food with the right technique, and they are less likely to damage gums and tooth enamel at the same time. When given the choice between soft, medium, and hard bristles, choose soft.
Tip #2 - Opt for a Smaller Brush Head
Often times the hardest part of brushing is reaching all of those hard-to-reach places in the back of the mouth. Picking a brush head that is small enough to easily reach all the way to your back molars helps to ensure that those teeth get enough individual attention while you brush. Pay special attention to brush head size when picking your next toothbrush.
Tip #3 - Choose Comfort
When looking at toothbrushes, the brush handle deserves special attention as well. You'll find it hard to brush for the full two minutes that you should be brushing if you don't have a comfortable grip on the toothbrush. A curved toothbrush handle with a non-slip grip is going to be your best choice.
Tip #4 - Choose a Recognized Product
It can be exciting to find a great deal on a pack of multiple toothbrushes, but make sure that you aren't picking up a no-name or a brand that you don't recognize. Toothbrushes need to be made out of the proper materials to be effective and safe, and you can be sure to get the quality you need by going with a well-known and trusted brand.
Tip #5 - Ask Your Medicine Hat Dentist for Recommendations
While a dentist will always provide you with the guidelines above, they will also be able to give you even more personalized pointers about the type of toothbrush you should use. For example, if your enamel is particularly thin, they you may have to look for even softer bristles than you are using now.
At Crestwood Dental Clinic in Medicine Hat, our dentists and hygienists would be more than happy to tell you how well your current toothbrush is working for your teeth and whether or not you should be looking for a different one.
